Feds' failure heightens Gulfcoasts' risk

The federal government likely could have contained the Deepwater Horizon oil spill had it followed its own guidelines drafted in 1994, according to a response expert who helped draft the documents 16 years ago.

Ron Gouguet, former NOAA oil spill response coordinator, said today that official guidelines called for fire booms (used for burns) to be on hand along the Gulf Coast to respond to a major oil spill.

Unfortunately, the government, on April 20 – the day the Deepwater Horizon exploded – had none on hand.

"I was disappointed when I read that (the federal government) didn't have the booms available, since they are particularly well suited for getting the oil right at the source," said Gouguet, a New Orleans native.

  1. It is just sad to see that we are ordered to follow the rules but the ones that make the rules not only don’t have to follow them but don’t even admit when they are wrong! Held accountable is not even the beginning, we are not only going to have to pay for this ( the government “oversight”) but we are then going to get a slap on the wrist at the pumps. The government and big business make the rules, break the rules, and we have to pay for all. Land of the free my ass. VH.
